I spent time in the harbour today with family. There were lots of pelicans about, chasing the fishing boats and jostling for the best spots to sit.
90% of the world’s pelicans originate from the Coorong in South Australia. This is the setting for Colin Thiele’s book Storm Boy. A wonderful tale about a young boy and his pelican Mr Percival. The book was made into a fabulous film. I’ve been fortunate two make two trips to the Coorong with my work for Aboriginal cultural experiences. It’s a beautiful place where there are salt-water lagoons and lakes and where the mouth of the Murray River opens up to the sea.
We’re a long way from the Coorong, but I’m happy to see a pelican where it is and it was great to get this series of shots of one pelican unseating another.
